    The CoNLL 2007 shared task on dependency parsing

    The Conference on Computational Natural Language Learning features a shared task, in which participants train and test their learning systems on the same data sets. In 2007, as in 2006, the shared task has been devoted to dependency parsing, this year with both a multilingual track and a domain adaptation track. In this paper, we define the tasks of the different tracks and describe how the data sets were created from existing treebanks for ten languages. In addition, we characterize the different approaches of the participating systems, report the test results, and provide a first analysis of these results

    Has Abe boosted Japanese confidence enough to get out of stagnation? An early evaluation of Abenomics

    The Japanese economy has since the beginning of the 1990’s suffered from a prolonged period of economic stagnation. Known as the Lost Decade, but extending its influence well into the 2000’s and beyond, many attempts has been made to reverse the stagnation. The latest of these has come to be known as Abenomics and is headed by incumbent Prime Minister Shinzō Abe. In this essay we investigate whether the economic policies under Abenomics have boosted economic confidence in Japan enough to reverse the stagnation. Our findings support that Abenomics have had strong effects on both consumer confidence as well as business confidence. Both types of confidence rose sharply in response to its policies and were accompanied by sizeable increases in both consumption as well as investment, contributing to increased growth in GDP and improvement in unemployment. Deflation has been reversed into a positive rate of inflation for the first time in decades. While it is too early to definitely say whether or not Abenomics is the cure needed to end the Japanese economic stagnation, the preliminary outlook is very promising

    Home death for children dying in six European countries

    Aim: Guidelines on pediatric palliative care underline that care at the end of life of chronically ill children should preferably be provided in the child’s home situation. Till present, no European data at population level are available for place of death of children. The aim of this study was to compare proportions of home death for children in six European countries and investigate relation between place of death and sociodemographic and clinical factors. Method: Data were collected from death certificates of all deceased children aged 1-17 in Belgium (BE), the Netherlands (NL), Norway (NO), England (E), Wales (W) (2003) and Italy (IT) (2002). Gender, cause (cancer, natural non-cancer and external) and place of death (home vs. outside home) and sociodemographic factors (socio-economic status (SES), degree of urbanization and number of hospital beds in the area) were included in the analyses. Data were analyzed using frequencies and multivariate logistic regression. Results: A total of 3.187 deaths were included in the analyses, 534 (16,8%) died from cancer. The proportion of home deaths was 19,6% (IT), 20,5% (E), 20,6% (W), 21,0% (NO), 23,8% (BE) and 28,6% (NL). Home death was more likely for children dying from cancer in BE, NL, E and W, for children with high SES in BE, in areas with low number of hospital beds in IT, and for boys in NL. Conclusion: The proportion of home deaths for children differs between studied countries. In most, but not all, countries children dying from cancer had better odds of dying at home than those not dying from cancer. Although acknowledging the influence of culture in the differences, studying care provisions in countries with higher proportions of home deaths, particularly in chronically ill children, can be helpful to identify factors facilitating terminally ill children to die at home. Early involvement of palliative care and equal access to these services can be important in this context. Funding: IWT-Flanders

    Coupled diffusion-deformation multiphase field model for elastoplastic materials applied to the growth of Cu6Sn5

    A coupled diffusion-deformation, multiphase field model for elastoplastic materials is presented. The equations governing the evolution of the phase fields and the molar concentration field are derived in a thermodynamically consistent way using microforce balance laws. As an example of its capabilities, the model is used to study the growth of the intermetallic compound (IMC) Cu6Sn5 during room-temperature aging. This IMC is of great importance in, e.g., soldering of electronic components. The model accounts for grain boundary diffusion between IMC grains and plastic deformation of the microstructure. A plasticity model with hardening, based on an evolving dislocation density, is used for the Cu and Sn phases. Results from the numerical simulations suggest that the thickness of the IMC layer increases linearly with time and that the morphology of the IMC gradually changes from scallop-like to planar, consistent with previous experimental findings. The model predicts that plastic deformation occurs in both the Cu and the Sn layers. Furthermore, the mean value of the biaxial stress in the Sn layer is found to saturate at a level of −8 MPa to −10 MPa during aging. This is in good agreement with experimental data

    Exome sequencing of contralateral breast cancer identifies metastatic disease

    Women with contralateral breast cancer (CBC) have significantly worse prognosis compared to women with unilateral cancer. A possible explanation of the poor prognosis of patients with CBC is that in a subset of patients, the second cancer is not a new primary tumor but a metastasis of the first cancer that has potentially obtained aggressive characteristics through selection of treatment. Exome and whole-genome sequencing of solid tumors has previously been used to investigate the clonal relationship between primary tumors and metastases in several diseases. In order to assess the relationship between the first and the second cancer, we performed exome sequencing to identify somatic mutations in both first and second cancers, and compared paired normal tissue of 25 patients with metachronous CBC. For three patients, we identified shared somatic mutations indicating a common clonal origin thereby demonstrating that the second tumor is a metastasis of the first cancer, rather than a new primary cancer. Accordingly, these patients all developed distant metastasis within 3 years of the second diagnosis, compared with 7 out of 22 patients with non-shared somatic profiles.     Genetic analysis of the role of protein kinase Ctheta in platelet function and thrombus formation.

    BACKGROUND: PKCtheta is a novel protein kinase C isozyme, predominately expressed in T cells and platelets. PKCtheta(-/-) T cells exhibit reduced activation and PKCtheta(-/-) mice are resistant to autoimmune disease, making PKCtheta an attractive therapeutic target for immune modulation. Collagen is a major agonist for platelets, operating through an immunoreceptor-like signalling pathway from its receptor GPVI. Although it has recently been shown that PKCtheta positively regulates outside-in signalling through integrin alpha(IIb)beta(3) in platelets, the role of PKCtheta in GPVI-dependent signalling and functional activation of platelets has not been assessed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In the present study we assessed static adhesion, cell spreading, granule secretion, integrin alpha(IIb)beta(3) activation and platelet aggregation in washed mouse platelets lacking PKCtheta. Thrombus formation on a collagen-coated surface was assessed in vitro under flow. PKCtheta(-/-) platelets exhibited reduced static adhesion and filopodia generation on fibrinogen, suggesting that PKCtheta positively regulates outside-in signalling, in agreement with a previous report. In contrast, PKCtheta(-/-) platelets also exhibited markedly enhanced GPVI-dependent alpha-granule secretion, although dense granule secretion was unaffected, suggesting that PKCtheta differentially regulates these two granules. Inside-out regulation of alpha(IIb)beta(3) activation was also enhanced downstream of GPVI stimulation. Although this did not result in increased aggregation, importantly thrombus formation on collagen under high shear (1000 s(-1)) was enhanced. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These data suggest that PKCtheta is an important negative regulator of thrombus formation on collagen, potentially mediated by alpha-granule secretion and alpha(IIb)beta(3) activation. PKCtheta therefore may act to restrict thrombus growth, a finding that has important implications for the development and safe clinical use of PKCtheta inhibitors

    Nevirapine plasma concentrations in premature infants exposed to single-dose nevirapine for prevention of mother-tochild transmission of HIV-1

    Background: No pharmacokinetic data exist for premature infants receiving single-dose nevirapine (sd NVP) for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV. Aim: To describe NVP decay pharmacokinetics in two groups of premature infants – those whose mothers either received or did not receive NVP during labour. Methods: Infants less than 37 weeks’ gestation were prospectively enrolled. Mothers received sd NVP during labour if time allowed. Infants received sd NVP and zidovudine. Blood was collected on specified days after birth and NVP concentrations were determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results: Data were obtained from 81 infants, 58 born to mothers who received sd NVP during labour (group I) and 23 to mothers who did not receive NVP (group II). Of the infants 29.6% were small for gestational age (SGA). Median (range) maximum concentration (Cmax), time to reach maximum concentration (Tmax), area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) and halflife (T½) were 1 438 (350 - 3 832) ng/ml, 25h50 (9h40 - 83h45), 174 134 (22 308 - 546 408) ng×h/ml and 59.0 (15.4 - 532.6) hours for group I and 1 535 (635 - 4 218) ng/ml, 17h35 (7h40 - 29h), 168 576 (20 268 - 476 712) ng×h/ml and 69.0 (22.12 - 172.3) hours for group II. For group II, the median (range) volume of distribution (Vd) and body clearance (Cl) were 1 702.6 (623.7 - 6 189.8) ml and 34.9 (6.2 - 163.8) ml/h. The AUC was higher (p=0.006) and Cl lower (p<0.0001) in SGA infants. Plasma concentrations exceeding 100 ng/ml were achieved over 8 days in 78% infants in group I and 70.0% in group II. The MTCT rate was 4.8%. Conclusion: Women in preterm labour often deliver with little advance warning. Our study suggests that NVP dosing of preterm infants as soon as possible after birth without maternal intrapartum dosing may be as effective as combined maternal and infant dosing.Web of Scienc
